Shelter

In the event of a major earthquake you house could be severely damaged turning it un-habitable, therefore you will need depending on your area climate a proper set of jackets, thermal underwear, umbrellas, light tents, blankets, sleeping bags, some cooking elements such as a portable gas grill or stove, casseroles, knifes , spoons, can openers, plastic or metal plates, a table lantern and flash lights lanterns with extra batteries, matches, candles and if it can be afforded a small electricity gasoline generator with sufficient gasoline supply.

Storage

Store all these items in a place away from possible structures collapses or any other kind of security hazards such as floods and fires, assure a clear path to these supplies  in case you house is destroyed. These materials must be labeled and secured in a container that protect them from weather and climate. Keep these items not visible to estranges because has been proven that people gets wild and aggressive under desperate situations. We don’t want  to sound selfish  but  keep your  survival stock plans  and location  information for yourself, your family and maybe your most trust worthy friends only. For the sake of your peace of mind  you can always still be helpful and cooperative to others but do not reveal what you have, and don’t feel bad about it because otherwise you could be a victim of robbery and even killing, remember that all this is only for you and your family survival.

Additional Precautions:

Be sure to know where your house main electrical breakers are and if it is safe  turn them off,  have a tool handy near the gas shut down valve to turn it off, again only if it safe to do it. Do the same with your water main.

The Minimum Recommended Inventory:

Drinking  Water

At least 3 liters per person for 30 days supply or 90 litters, Medicines

60 days supply of medicines for people under critical or chronic conditions such as for diabetes, heart diseases, cancer etc.

But never less than 30 days.

Food

Be sure to include sufficient food for at least 30 days supply for each family member, this inventory must be composed of not perishable articles such as canned food, cereals, dried milk, canned juices and dried fruits. It could be good idea to also include vitamin C just in case the availability of fresh or dried fruits scarce. Include one or two  manual can openers in your food stock and don’t forget matches.

Cellular Phone

Include  charging  means  such  as  for  car,  solar, winding etc.

Walkie Talkie and Emergency Multiband Radios
The  choice  here  is  the  long  range  type  of  12 miles or more. This could be  the  only mean to stay communicated  between families member  while checking  around  or  searching  for other family members  in  distant  points,  it is  possible  that even cell phones  could be  disrupted.Be  sure  to include additional  set  of  batteries  and  a solar charger  if available. Don’t  forget  an emergency  band radio to listen to emergency announcements.

A First Aid Emergency Kit Box

Include  bandages  strips  such  as  Band  Aids, aspirins, tablets to disinfect water,  gauze  pads and  rolls, scissors, tweezers, soap  and hand sanitizers, tooth  paste and brush, disposable rubber  or  latex gloves,  protection eye goggles, thermometer, sterile  eyewash  solution, include  a box  of matches, prescription, antibiotics and anti-diarrhea medicines, alcohol, feminine napkins, sanitary paper rolls, Keep a telephone list of doctors, emergency services, relatives and close friends.

Post Earthquake Survival Guide

Facts:

The recent major earthquakes in different parts of the worlds and other natural disasters has demonstrated  that supply and help even for the most necessary items to survive after an earthquake wont be available  with  the required urgency. All governments rich and poor seems to be unprepared to respond on time and on volume to the people needs.

In a major disaster most communications, roads, services and utilities are disrupted, creating a major shortage of  vital supplies such as water, food, medicine and in most cases shelter. It has been seen that help from any source could take from several days to weeks before reaches the affected areas, and even months to restate and normalize the supply chain.

Lean  Manufacturing Principles and Tools:

By Engitek.com

Lean is a manufacturing philosophy  based in no waste principles involving all aspects related to productivity and economics. In short Lean Manufacturing can be summarized in these simple principles:

1- No waste on human resources, money, time or other resources.

2- All actions must produce an added value.

3- All work must be measurable, standardized, recorded, verifiable and constantly improved

4- All employees in the organization must perform a productive activity

Lean manufacturing has identified seven causes of waste and make use of many disciplines to achieve lean results, here are some of the most recurred:

The Seven Causes of Waste:

1-Overproduction: Causing use of raw materials that otherwise could be used on actually demanded products, inadequate use of  personnel, additionally creates product and material accumulation in the production floor that difficult the manufacturing process.

2-Unnecessary inventories: Results in captive monetary resources that aren’t producing profit, increases tax liability, make use of valuable storage space that can’t be used for other purposes and are in high risk of being damaged or rendered obsolete.

3-Unnecessary transport of people, materials or equipment
